Cosmetic dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry (or esthetic dentistry) is a discipline within dentistry in which the appearance of the teeth with dental materials is enhanced. Esthetic dentistry can be done with use of tooth-colored filling materials, crowns, veneers and facings to improve the shape, position, and color of the teeth. Teeth whitening is also part of cosmetic dentistry.
Teeth Whitening
In our practice we offer teeth whitening treatments. Therefore a custom made whitening tray is made, which you can use at home. The tray is filled with whitening gel and left in your mouth for a certain time.
The costs of home whitening are approximately € 170,- per jaw for the first time. When you prefer whitening in the upper and lower jaw the costs will be around € 340,-. These cost include the imprints, the model, the whitening trays, instructions, and 4 tubes of whitening gel.
If you wish you can repeat the treatment after a while. When you still own the whitening trays you will only need new tubes of whitening gel. These are available at our front desk for €10,- per piece.
Dental Hygiene
Good oral hygiene is a prerequisite for a healthy mouth. This is why we focus heavily on dental hygiene within the practice. The treatment by the dental hygienist focuses on obtaining and maintaining healthy teeth and surrounding tissues.
During a general dental hygiene appointment one can expect the following things:
- Medical history screening and update
- Inspection of the soft tissues, tongue and palate
- Inspection of the gums
- If necessary dental x-rays
- Dental hygiene instructions, (discoloring agent to show visible plaque might be used), supporting literature by use of brochures
- Scaling and polishing of the teeth
- If necessary fluoride treatment
- After examination and determination of your oral status additional appointments might be necessary.
Dental health and general health
There is a direct link between oral health and general health and there is continuing research being done to further explore this link.
Cardiovascular disease
Research has shown that poor oral hygiene and inflammation of the gums contribute not only to teeth loss, but increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Among patients with severe gum disease it showed that they had calcified arteries, which consisted of the same bacteria found in dental plaque. Moreover, researchers found that the risk of heart disease increased by 20% when gums were inflamed.
Gum disease also increases the chance of getting a cerebral stroke.
Pregnancy
Research has also shown that there is a correlation with gum disease and pregnancy. Women who are pregnant and have gum disease have an increased chance of delivering a premature baby or a baby with low birth weight.
Other diseases
Severe forms of gum disease (periodontitis) may also be associated with the existence of physical disorders such as type 2 diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis.
To bring the optimal dental care to our patients with the focus on dental hygiene and prevention, we have five Hygienists and three Preventive Assistants working in our practice.
Endodontics
A root canal treatment, also known as nerve treatment, is a dental treatment in which the pulp of the root canal of a tooth is removed and the resulting space is filled. The. For this purpose, the term endodontic dentistry or Endodontics is used and this is the science that deals with treating the dental pulp (nerve) of the tooth.
In cases of complex root canal treatments we may refer you to a specialist.
General dentistry
General dentistry is a term that is used to refer to all treatments that may be executed by a general dentist. Examples are:
Implants

Gingivitis
The bacteria that stick in the dental plaque along the edge of your gums cause inflammation. The first stage of gingivitis is called gingivitis (NVVP, 2016). You can recognize gum inflammation from red, swollen gums, that lay loosely around the teeth. Furthermore, gums will bleed when you brush or use a toothpick. Inflamed gums are seldom painful, it is therefore important that you regularly visit a dentist or dental hygienist who checks your gums and, if necessary, performs appropriate treatments.
Parodontitis
If gingivitis is not treated in time, it will (in a limited group of people) pass into the second stage of gingivitis. This stage is called periodontitis. In periodontitis, the fibers and the jawbone are also inflamed. The fibers are affected, jawbone erodes and the pockets (a gap between the gums and the tooth / choke) become deeper. If one does not intervene in time, eventually there will be so little jawbone that the teeth will be too loose and can no longer be saved (NVVP, 2016). Treatment of periodontitis can stop the inflammatory process. It is therefore important that you regularly visit a dentist or dental hygienist who checks your gums and, if necessary, performs appropriate treatments.
Postoperative care
If you have undergone a complicated treatment our care does not stop once you have left the practice. If you experience difficult symptoms afterwards or have questions you can always contact us.
If you have been referred for treatment you should contact the specialist who has treated you.
